Inaugural Sustainability Studies Juried Art Exhibition

The Faculty of Social Science and Humanities will host a Juried Art Exhibition to mark the start of the new minor option in Sustainability Studies at the university. The top three winners will receive a cash prize (amount to be determined).

Theme: What is Sustainability?

Growing ecological and social crises are among the most pressing challenges we face as a society. Higher education institutions have turned to 'sustainability studies' to develop knowledgeable professionals and cultivate interdisciplinary solutions to address these issues. While the word 'sustainability' might conjure up familiar images of wind turbines and green energy, its meaning might be interpreted differently depending on one’s perspective.

We ask artists to submit pieces that explore sustainability in all its forms, allowing viewers to understand there is no single way to define it.

Jurors

A panel of jurors will be selected based on ties to the local art community as well as interest in the field of sustainability. They will judge the submitted pieces based on adherence to the theme as well as the medium used.

Accepted mediums

Work done in any medium will be accepted but submissions must be 2D prints of the original work. Pieces must measure at least 8.5 by 11 inches, and must not exceed 27 by 41 inches. Anything outside of this range will not be accepted. Please note that we cannot receive glass-framed items. 

  • Note: This only pertains to the Showcase and Juried Art Exhibition. Do not send in your original pieces as a submission. Please see entry rules for more information.

Entry rules

  1. An artist may submit a total of two entries to the exhibition. All work must be original and created by the entrant.
  2. Submissions must be two-dimensional and should be done on print materials. If organizers must alter the work for displaying (using tacks etc.) they will not be responsible for damages to the works.
  3. Items will be inspected upon arrival. Pieces will also be photographed and catalogued.
  4. Submissions must be on display no less than 24 hours prior to the start of the event and must be taken down no more than 24 hours following the end of the event.
  5. Entries must be received by Thursday, August 1 at 4:30 p.m.
    • Note: Do not submit original artwork at this time.
    • The Faculty of Social Science and Humanities and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology will not be responsible for loss or damage to materials submitted by mail.
  6. Successful entrants will be notified by email.
  7. If an artist wishes to offer their work for sale, they must include in their entry the listed price as well as contact information.
  8. Entrants must fill out a submission form and send the completed copy to the contact mentioned below. Please include a photo file of your submission, making sure it follows the following format: FirstnameLastname2019.jpg. Please ensure the resolution of your file is at least 300 DPI. 

Event date: Friday, September 20 with a running exhibit of one week at Ontario Tech University's downtown Oshawa campus location. We hope to host the exhibit for an additional week at the university's north Oshawa campus location.
